Audi board chairman Markus Duesmann said on Friday that the German automaker had formally registered as a power-unit manufacturer in Formula One.
He said. “If you think about Le Mans, DTM and Formula E, we have always been very active and very successful. We want to continue this success story in F1,”
Audi has not stated whether it will run its own squad or simply provide engines.
It stated that it would make other announcements before the end of the year.
Audi is anticipated to take over the Sauber team in Switzerland, which is now known as Alfa Romeo.
Following the Audi news, Alfa Romeo’s parent company Stellantis announced that its partnership with Sauber would terminate after the 2023 season.
Duesmann went on to say that Audi’s choice was influenced by new regulations requiring a greater electronic component in engines and totally sustainable fuels.
“This is a tremendous moment for our sport that underlines the enormous strength we have as a global platform that continues to expand,” F1 president Stefano Domenicali said.
According to Duesmann, the rising proportion of power from the hybrid element of the engine corresponded with Audi’s desire to become a fully electric manufacturer.
He went on to say that F1’s budget cap, first implemented in 2021, “makes it very appealing,” and that F1’s aim to go carbon neutral by 2030 was also important.
F1 will continue to employ 1.6-liter turbo hybrid engines in 2026, although with major alterations from those used since 2014.
The hybrid element will provide more than half of the total power, the complicated MGU-H – which recovers energy from the turbo – will be eliminated, and sustainable, synthetic fuels will be employed.
These emit solely the carbon that was removed from the atmosphere to create them.
Porsche, another Volkswagen brand, is also slated to enter F1 as an engine partner to Red Bull in 2026.
Duesmann would not confirm this, but he did say that the two businesses would be completely independent, with Audi’s in Germany and Porsche’s in the United Kingdom if it entered.
